Dictate to ChatGPT

ChatGPT has a microphone in its message box that turns your speech into text you can edit. Glaido does the same with a hotkey that works in ChatGPT's desktop app, in chatgpt.com in any browser, and in every other app you write in. A formatting rule keeps your prompt in your words, with spoken lists turned into numbered points.

Free to start on macOS and Windows 11.

THREE WAYS TO TALK

ChatGPT's mic, ChatGPT's Voice, and Glaido

There are two voice buttons in ChatGPT, and they do different things.

  • The microphone in the message box is dictation. You speak, ChatGPT transcribes it, and you can edit the text before you send it.
  • Voice is a live spoken conversation. ChatGPT answers out loud, and there's no draft to edit.
  • Glaido works like the microphone, with your own hotkey instead of a button, in ChatGPT and in every other app.

If ChatGPT is the only place you dictate and you don't mind tidying the transcript, the built-in microphone does the job. Glaido earns its place when the work leaves ChatGPT: you paste the draft into Gmail, reply in Slack about it, or ask Claude for a second opinion, and the same hotkey still works. It also keeps the audio of a failed dictation on your computer, so you can retry it instead of saying it all again.

IN PRACTICE

Prompts that come out the way you meant them

Most typed prompts are one line, because typing the background is tedious. That's why ChatGPT's first answer so often misses: it never heard who the post is for or which tone you hate. When you talk, the background comes out on its own.

Ask for a draft with constraints

A new chat in the ChatGPT desktop app.

YOU SAY
“write a linkedin post about our new pricing page keep it under a hundred and fifty words no hashtags and end with a question”
WHAT LANDS IN CHATGPT

Write a LinkedIn post about our new pricing page. Keep it under 150 words, no hashtags, and end with a question.

Work through pasted material

After pasting a long email thread into chatgpt.com.

YOU SAY
“summarize this thread then list the open questions and who owns each one”

Summarize this thread, then list the open questions and who owns each one.

Compare options you list out loud

Planning a team offsite.

YOU SAY
“compare three options for our offsite one barcelona two lisbon three porto look at flights from berlin the weather in march and things to do as a team”
WHAT LANDS IN CHATGPT

Compare three options for our offsite: 1. Barcelona 2. Lisbon 3. Porto Look at flights from Berlin, the weather in March, and things to do as a team.

THE SETUP

The rule behind those examples

The AI cleanup tidies your rambling. The prompt stops it from rewriting your request or, worse, answering it before ChatGPT does.

The ChatGPT desktop app and chatgpt.com are separate entries, because a browser isn't an app in Glaido's picker. Add the sites of the other assistants you use to the same rule, and every AI chat gets prompts in the same shape.

One thing to avoid: the commands hotkey sends your request to Glaido, which answers it itself. To write a prompt for ChatGPT, use the dictation hotkey.

GOOD TO KNOW

ChatGPT and Glaido: questions

Does ChatGPT have voice typing?

Yes. Click the microphone icon in the message box, speak, and ChatGPT turns it into text you can edit before sending. It only works inside ChatGPT.

What's the difference between ChatGPT dictation and Voice?

Dictation turns your speech into a text message you review and send. Voice is a live spoken conversation, where ChatGPT answers out loud.

Will Glaido send the message for me?

No. Glaido pastes the text into the message box and stops. You decide when to press Enter.

Can I use the same setup for Claude or Gemini?

Yes. Add claude.ai or gemini.google.com under Websites in the same rule. Each app or website can belong to one rule.
