Voice input for Claude Code

Claude Code has its own dictation: run /voice and hold Space. It needs a Claude.ai sign-in and a microphone on the same machine, so it isn't there with an API key, on Bedrock, or over SSH. Glaido pastes into your terminal window instead, so it works in all of those, in 100 languages, and in every other app you use.

Free to start on macOS and Windows 11.

BUILT-IN VS GLAIDO

When /voice works, and when it doesn't

If you sign in with a Claude.ai account and run Claude Code on your own machine, /voice is a solid choice. It transcribes live into the prompt, it's tuned for coding terms, and it doesn't count against your usage. Outside that setup, it isn't available at all.

Glaido works in all of these because it doesn't talk to Claude Code at all. It records on your computer and pastes into your terminal window, like a keyboard would.

THE SETUP

A Terminal rule with your exact words

Claude Code reads intent well, so your prompt doesn't need rewriting on the way in. Raw text passes your exact words, which keeps paths, flags, and branch names from being reshaped. Your style still sets capitals and punctuation.

  1. Open the terminal you run Claude Code in, hold your dictation hotkey, say a sentence, and release. Your terminal now shows up first in Glaido's app picker.
  2. In Glaido, open Formatting, click Add rule, name it Terminal, and add your terminal under Apps. Add the Claude Code desktop app too if you use it. On Windows, add Windows Terminal.
  3. Keep the Standard style and turn on Raw text.
  4. Run claude, hold the hotkey, and say what you want done.

Raw text has one trade-off: it skips the AI cleanup, and the cleanup is part of what gets unusual words right. If your project names keep coming out wrong, turn Raw text off for this rule and add them to the Dictionary.

IN PRACTICE

Briefs, not one-liners

Claude Code does its best work when it knows the whole situation: which tests matter, what you already tried, what must not change. In a terminal, most people type one line of that. Spoken, the full brief takes about as long as the one-liner.

For a brief like that, use hands-free mode: Fn + Space on macOS or Ctrl + Win + Shift on Windows. Turn on Enter to stop and paste in Settings > Hotkeys > App, and the habit gets short: talk, press Enter to paste, read, press Enter to send.

Things to know

  • Long dictations show up as pasted text. Claude Code collapses large pastes into a placeholder like [Pasted text #1]. The full text is still sent with your prompt.
  • Claude Code inside Cursor or VS Code uses the editor's rule. The editor is the app with focus, so its rule wins. Add the editor to this rule or give it its own.
  • On Windows, commands don't read terminal selections. Glaido won't press Ctrl+C in a terminal, because that would stop Claude Code. Dictate the request instead.
GOOD TO KNOW

Claude Code and Glaido: questions

Does Claude Code have voice mode?

Yes. Run /voice to turn on dictation, then hold Space while you talk. /voice tap switches to tap to start and tap to send. It needs a Claude.ai sign-in and a local session.

Why does Claude Code say Unknown command: /voice?

Claude Code only offers /voice when a Claude.ai account is your active sign-in. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, an apiKeyHelper, or a third-party provider is set, it takes precedence and /voice disappears.

Does Glaido work with Claude Code over SSH?

Yes. Glaido records on your computer and pastes into your local terminal window, which sends the text over SSH like anything you type.

Can I keep /voice turned on?

Yes. /voice listens for Space inside the prompt and Glaido listens for its own hotkey. Use one per prompt, or the text arrives twice.
